How to hand context to an AI assistant, step by step

When an AI answer feels generic, the instinct is often to rewrite the question. Sometimes the missing piece is not better wording. It is the background a colleague would have needed before answering.

You can supply that background without connecting an assistant to everything you have ever written.

This article covers one narrow job: turning context you have already prepared into the exact text you place in a chat. It does not explain how to build the source notes or compare an answer with and without context.

1. Name the decision

Write the question in one sentence. A narrow question makes it easier to judge what belongs. The fictional studio’s question is: “Should we raise prices for new clients?”

2. Select only answer-changing context

Pull out the current goal, a real constraint, and any past decision that rules out an obvious option. For the studio, those are a preference for fewer, higher-value clients, a need to protect two long-standing clients from a sudden increase, and a previous across-the-board increase that lost a valued client.

Remove names, exact amounts, and unrelated history. Decide what to give, blur, keep local, or never share before the material enters the chat.

3. Separate background from the ask

Use simple labels:

• Goal: what you want to move toward.
• Constraint: what cannot change right now.
• Past decision: what was tried or ruled out, and why.
• Question: the decision you are making now.

This structure helps both you and the assistant see whether an important piece is missing. It does not require a complicated prompt.

- Constraint: Keep the two long-standing clients on their current rates.
- Past decision: An across-the-board increase cost us a valued client. Do not repeat it.

Question
What is the lowest-risk way to test a higher rate for new clients? Give three options, recommend one, and state which line of context ruled out the other options.

Notice what is absent: client names, exact rates, the full decision log, and the rest of the vault. The handoff contains enough to reason inside the studio’s boundaries, but not enough to reconstruct its private records.

4. Check the answer before acting

Ask which part of the context shaped the recommendation. Verify facts and notice any assumption the assistant added. Advice is an input to your judgment, not the decision itself. When you decide, use one next action and record the reasoning so the next consultation starts ahead.

If your material is still scattered, organize the notes you control first. If the answer remains broad, return to the test for context that changes an answer instead of pasting more material by default.
